Using High Temp Paint Masks
Before starting any project it is important to understand the uses for high temperature paint masks. Masking tape and masking discs are ideal for many high temp paint jobs such as general powder coating, taping off holes and grounding areas. Not only can masking tape and discs be useful, but they are also economical and leave no surface residue behind unlike other common masks.
For temperatures up to 325ºF/163ºC = Crepe mask
For temperatures up to 400ºF/204ºC = Polyester mask
For temperatures up to 500ºF/260ºC = Kapton mask
For most paint applications with temperatures up to 325º F use a high temp Crepe disc mask or Crepe masking tape. With temperatures up to 400º F use Polyester masking tape or disc masks and for temperatures up to 500 use Kapton masking tape or disc masks. Another great taping product is silicone fusing tape, or self-fusing silicone tape. This can be especially useful in both high and low temperature situations and leaves no sticky residue behind.
Working with tapped/threaded holes or irregular contours?
Try fitting a cone plug into the hole to seal the gap and the surrounding surface area. Cone plugs work great because they can easily be flipped around for other uses such as fitting over dowels, threaded studs or any surface extrusions.
